I don't know what's happened but /etc/inetd.conf is usually there unless
some sort of custom install doesn't install it but even then I'm pretty sure
it's suppose to be there. There is no telnetd running unless there is a
connection made.
once inetd receives a connection request on port 23 it spawns in.telnetd on
that socket.
what happens when you try to start inetd from the command line on the
console?
Have you checked your logs "/var/log/messages" for any errors?

Hi all,
I just did a fresh install of redhat 6.2, booted up and
found that i could not telnet into that machine, not from itself
or from another machine.
I also noticed no telnetd, or inetd running and no
inetd.conf in the /etc directory...is this normal for linux sorry
I'm used to unix....
I would appreciate any help in regards to getting telnet
working
