At home we had exactly the same problem as George has.
This was on a Sun Sparcstation4 which someone else had done the install.
I dare say they chose "workstation" rather than "custom" hence lots and lots
of "standard" services didn't get installed.
Mind you, on this machine, it only has a teeny little hard disk so a full
installation probably wouldn't have worked either.
As the machine doesn't have a CD or floppy, we ended up getting very
creative with Netscape and downloaded source packages from another machine,
compiled them etc so now we have inetd at least and now telnet.
George might be better off just re-installing and picking "custom"; you get
prompted anyway if you haven't picked a dependency.
