XF86Setup is probably more flexible; the interface is obscure though.
I would suggest you generate your XF86Config using XF86Setup and
copy the relevant screen portions from a working one.

How are you starting X? XDM, GDM, some other display manager? If so
you will need to restart your display manager more than likely.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] may be what you are after; it very low
traffic compared to slug. If you have the bandwidth available I'd
suggest you attempt an upgrade to potato (frozen).
