geez... just found the answer to my own question.
Using RH Linux (and possibly other distributions) run "printtool" from a terminal
within X as root.
Select Add
Select SAMBA/Win95/NT printer
enter details of the computer that its on and the printers name / type etc.
you'll prob also need to set EOF to ON so that when print jobs finish the printer
spits out the last page. The Canon website doesn't supply drivers for Linux, but
RH came with drivers for the 4000 series (which seems to work with my 4100).
