Yep, Tony's right.
In your /etc/inittab is an entry for S0 which is usually for your /dev/ttyS0
device.
This respawns quickly if their is a conflict or can't initialize on an "init
q" command.
Have you got Mgetty running for dial in access? If you have then check your
settings as mgetty may be dying..
