Just checking - is this definitely plugged into a Hub and not a switch ?
I experienced similar problems and found that while the switch though it
had negotiated 'Full Duplex', the NIC (And Linux) were running 'Half
Duplex'. (albeit namely due to problems with the EtherExpress driver).
This connection would work well until a large transfer was started - when
the link would drop down to 0-3Kb per second rather than the normal
10-12Kb per second. (unfortunately this large transfer was the nightly
backup!)
Forcing the switch to 100Mb half-duplex rather than auto-negotiate fixed
the problem. The newer version of the network driver has seen the problem
go away.
Cheers
Jason.
