D'oh!
I should think before I type. Of course I am running programs of my
reiserfs (I have it as my / fs). The error reported by win4lin was
that my fs did not support memort mapped files (I don't recall the
exact wording of the error). I have not had time to investigate
further. For now, an ext2 partition will work.

sad but true.
I need to have word around for the project documentation (hey, not
my idea!) <rant> and before someone yells star-office, it doesn't
even come close to being a substitute for word - the import/export
filters are nowhere near good enough for the documents we deliver </rant>
but at least they let me run linux on my desktop for my everyday work!
