There's actually more to WinCE than the Palm-alike aspect - we're doing ports
of our JVM to it here, and it can be configured as a plain embedded OS without
a GUI. It is also available in a 'handheld' form - think like a laptop but
slightly smaller.
It most definitely isn't Windows. The API is a cut-down version of the Windows
API that we all know and loathe. Win32 binaries will most definitely NOT
load and run even on the x86 incarnation. Microsoft's latest attempts to
rebrand it as 'Windows Powered' borders on deliberate attempts to mislead.
Personally, having had ample opportunity to try it in Palm-alike and
handheld configurations, I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole. The UI on my
elderly Psion 3a is streets ahead in terms of usability, for me. I'm not
familiar with Palms, so won't comment on WinCE vs. Palm.
A friend actually possess a CE handhelp. They are being used as the base for
custom applications, which is fair enough, but why anybody would want a
regular one is totally beyond me. He won it in a work draw....
