it's kinda changed too.
Remember "Revenge of the Nerds"? (and the sequel)
That was all pocket protectors and thick rimmed glasses etc.
And Rick Moranis ended up getting the girl too.
(I loved that film)

Rachel's right in that it's not only about computer stuff.
In fact the sort of original nerds were more engineers
or mathematicians in general.

Nowdays it seems that geek at least seems to mean more an
expert in something.  You're a geek but still dress "cool"
and go to pubs/clubs, pick up chicks/guys, and so on rather
than being a loner playing on your computer into the night
and chatting with fellow geeks on email/irc.

(don't forget "dork" was another similar kind of one too
in some ways)
