Looks like what you are doing is correct.
If you can ping the other network NIC of the router, then the routes are
working.
The ping to other network hosts is not working because they aren't sending
the replies to the correct place. You need to place the router in the way
because it is the only machine that knows where the correct network is to
send the reply to.

simple solution: set the default gateway on all the other network machines
to the router box.

more complex solution: do above, then configure router box to continue the
correct routing setup the network had before.
