Wireless LANS are really useful for situations where you can't lay cable, and where you want to allow people to roam around the building with laptops. But there is a problem. When you lay cable to form an internal network, the only way people can connect to that internal network is to plug up to a hub or switch on that network. With wireless, however, they don't need to do that. They can sit outside and do their work. So can other people. There was an article in this month's Crypto-Gram about people wandering around with a laptop with a wireless network card doing DHCP requests, and successfully connecting to company and private wireless networks. When deploying wireless networks, you must ensure that you are using "keys" which authenticate the wireless end-points, otherwise anyone with a wireless laptop can connect to the network and act as if they're an internal user. -- Rebecca Richards, CCSA CCSE, Unix/Security Consultant, e-Secure Pty Ltd "Secure in a Networked World" Phone: (02) 9438 4984 Fax: (02) 9438 4986 Suite 201, 2-4 Pacific Highway Mobile: 0412 823 206 St Leonards NSW Australia Email: [EMAIL PROTECTED] ACN 068 798 194 http://www.e-secure.com.au -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://slug.org.au/lists/listinfo/slug
