simple things that make me weep.

I'm installing a new Debian and can't get the mouse to work. I doubt it's
hardware, because:

This box is a test bed, and yesterday this mouse worked fine under SuSE;
The mouse works through a switch and works fine on three other boxes;
I haven't moved the hardware at all (except the mouse of course ;-)

On the old RH install, gpm looks like this:
[david@ns david]$ ps ax | grep gpm
  521 ttyS0    S      0:00 gpm -t ms
The debian version looks like this:
david@test:~$ ps ax | grep gpm
  509 ?        S      0:00 /usr/sbin/gpm -m /dev/mouse -t ms

What dumb thing have I done?

PS, for debianites ... while trying to resolve this problem in the
X-configuration part of the installation, I managed to totally freeze the
box and had to hit reset :(
