May I presume you are using a ppp dialup for net access?

RH 7 perhaps does it differently, but I am (using 6.0,) more than
content to run a variant of a script called "firewallss" which is
built as an rc.d script for an ether interface but since of course, a
dial-up is not (in general) initiated as part of boot-up, must needs
be started and stopped as a function of ifup-post and ifdown-post
respectively.

In particular, the script needs to determine/ know the dynamic IP
allocation in order to define the chains, and I use it to block
flycast and such annoying links.

Having figured all this out, I am for the present quite happy to
have it all in a script which I can easily hack. Is there however,
another method intrinsic to RH 7 or even 6.0 which does all this
already and about which I should know?

I have a pile of other "newbie" questions for the list too, such as
how to interpret failed-burn (nasty!) error reports from Xcdroast/
cdrecord and what basic ".wav" (or similar) mark, cut-and-paste
utility for hour-length tracks is available? :-)
