have you tried

shell> mke2fs /dev/hdd4

??

and I'd actually check it is /dev/hdd4

as generally wouldn't it be /dev/hdd1 ??

but yeah whatever you mount to read the disk, just mke2fs it...

or if you still want winblows compatability just goto /mnt/zip or whever 
you mount it and do a (be carefull with this command)

shell> rm * -fR

and you'll erase the disk leaving its current format untouched.

a ZIP drive is just a small portable hard drive... =)
