unfortunately, you aren't going to get much layout back.

(put the doc under RCS or something. C-x v v under emacs)


you may also get to like (x)emacs' AUCTeX mode. it'll run latex/xdvi
for you, saving you from the trials of "up, up, return" ;)

add "(require 'tex-site)" to your .emacs and then load a TeX file.
C-h m will give you a list of mode keybindings, etc.
