I just rolled back PAM - did a rpm -ivh --force --nodeps over the top over
whatever I had. Verified that the modules and the symlinks in /lib were
correct - still no joy and same behaviour.
Doing a "system call trace" showed that before pam_smb_auth.so is not read
unless the user exists on the local machine. The nolocal option is meant to
stop this right?

I'll give it a second pass - for good luck :-)

Thanks to everyone for their help so far.
I'm satisfied I've finally solved the problem if I have to add all the
local users here with aster* passwords to /etc/password & shadow.
I'll have a shot at enabling winbind in NSS as a bit of a grotty (and
unusual) workaround. At least I've got that part of windbind working.
windbind in /etc/nsswitch.conf has been disabled prior to the submission of
this problem.

Luke
