you can use multiple PCI cards fine, so long as the cards+drivers
support MMIO mode, where they can move the cards from the standard VGA
locations out to somewhere else.

ie: matrox

one card can remain in the standard spot, so you can still have one
bodgy S3 in there if you want. the trick then is getting them
initialised in the right order, which usually means switching PCI
slots.
