Hello Again All,

I can see the modem when this occurs. The data light flashes when I
click on the KInternet icon. In YAST2 there is space for three Modem
Initialisation Strings. The first two were filled automatically when
the modem was detected during set-up. The strings are as follows,

1st ATZ
2nd AT Q0 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0

Now when the Log for KInternet is viewed, a list of what is happening
shows that the first Initialisation string is accepted. But the second
one is not, it tries twice then queries that the modem may be turned
off. So there is no dial tone, no dialling, essentially it is like the
modem is switched off, yet both the Power and Terminal Ready LEDS are
alight.

So last night I dug through the CD supplied and found a different second
Modem Initialisation String which is as follows,

AT&FE0V1S0=07C17D2S95=47W1

After entering this, I tested the modem and I gained a dial tone, it
dialled my ISP, I connected, downloaded my emails using KMail and
browsed the web with Konqueror. But I left it inactive and it
automatically disconnected (a setting in YAST2 that makes the modem
disconnect after a specified time of inactivity, in this case 240 sec).
When I went to reconnect I gained the same message in the Log, i.e.,
modem may be turned off, yet it is on. My simple guess is the 2nd
Initialisation string has a problem. As a Windows user this is all very
foreign to me, and I feel I am fumbling in the dark. I really don't
understand how it dialled once, now won't using the same settings. I am
assuming these Initialisation strings tell the modem how to operate and
what to do. But why does the second one I put in work once, but not again?

I hope this further information helps, if it doesn't please tell me, I
am trying to get my head around it all.

Thanks
Paul Copeland
