Try using XF86Setup as root-- it is semi-graphical, that is once you
have set up your mouse it is fully graphical. You will need the svga-16
xserver plus whatever xserver is recommended for your video card.

Later is better. The current stable release is 2.2r5. You can easily
update using
# apt-get update
# apt-get dist-upgrade
if your /etc/apt/sources.list is tweaked to a local mirror. Try using
apt-setup if you haven't done this yet.
