a) modems don't talk ethernet.

b) cat5 uses RJ-45 connectors, phone lines use RJ-12.  Good luck fitting a
RJ-45 connector into a RJ-12 socket.

UNLESS

c) The only PCMCIA cards I've seen that do both modem and NIC in the one go
are one model of Xircom cards which I now forget the model name of.  If you
had one of these, you'd be able to use both the modem and NIC part of the
cards.

In short, you need a proper network PCMCIA card.
