Perhaps you should try doing 'ps -ef | grep squid' instead of top (since top
doesn't list all processes on your screen). If squid is not running, try
running it manually.

Don't run squid in daemon mode ($SQUIDHOME/bin/squid -Nd9) and observe the
error messages. See squid's FAQ for more info (www.squid-cache.org).
