You can always do dumps to tape and incur no backup software charges. :-)

There are scenarios where this doesn't work well such as where you must
backup networked machines. But there's always rsync. Using cygwin you can 
even install rsync on windows machines:

Then you can have the winboxen rsync daily to the backup server and run 
dump daily to put it all on tape.
