Remote desktop uses terminal services' RDP protocol, but adds a nicer client with a simpler connection negotiation GUI and file transfer. Its much faster than VNC. Its slower than Citrix ICA.
As with Terminal Services, there's a linux client for RemoteDesktop called RDesktop which works fairly well (although only supporting an older version of the protocol), and I can mail you packages if you wish. IIRC< it is encrypted, but you should double check that its secure too (not easily broken or circumventable). Google Is Your Friend.
