I was considering a Seagate Hornet Travan IDE/ATAPI tape drive for use in a Linux server I manage for a local community group as I wanted to stay sub $1000 to fit their budget.
The supplier I use has stated that these drives aren't being stocked due to the high cost of warranty service. They also stated that Sony and HP do not have entry level drives in this price range anymore. It's been suggested that we use an Onstream DI30 IDE drive (http://www.onstream.com/products/di30.shtml). I had a quick look and they seem to fit what we need. $700 for the drive, models that do either 1Mbps or 2Mbps and the cartridges hold either 30G or 50G. They also appear to have good support for Linux. IDE or SCSI interface. Does anyone have any experiences with these that might be useful? I'm happy to summarise to the list.
