I took my own advice and bought a Liteon burner, and Liteon DVD player. I'm delighted to report they both work without a hitch. For the benefit of the archives, designation of the burner is LTR-40125S, and DVD player LTD-166S. I ordered them online from C W Supplies <http://www.cws.net.au>; I placed my order on Sunday and they arrived on Tuesday morning, so I'm quite impressed. I think the price was OK, too: $99 for the burner, $79 for DVD player.
They replaced my previous setup of one CDROM drive and one DVD player/burner combo - an older Ricoh unit that never worked quite to my satisfaction. Under SuSE burning was slooow, and DVD playback unbearably choppy. When I replaced SuSE with Libranet, I run into some troubles configuring the device properly; in the end I've come to the conclusion that although workable, having SCSI emulation and DVD playback on one device might not be an optimal solution. Hence this change. Although Libranet didn't quite get the initial configuration right, it redeemed itself once I installed the new devices and needed to set them up. A short trip to Adminmenu, click on CD-R Drives, click on "setup SCSI emulation", select the device - done! Click on CD-ROM drives, select default - done! Now my DVDs play without skipping a beat, and burning a disk takes under three minutes. I'm a happy customer, and I'm definitely going to keep Libranet on this system. In fact, I'm even considering replacing SuSE on the other one! --------------------------------------------------------------------- "In the struggle of Good against Evil, it's always the people who get killed." -- Eduardo Galeano -- 12:43:16 up 17:04, 1 user, load average: 0.15, 0.09, 0.03-- -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group - http://slug.org.au/ More Info: http://lists.slug.org.au/listinfo/slug
