Mainline kernel patches apply against the previous full release version..
for example, 2.4.20-pre1 applies against 2.4.19. patch-2.4.20 also will
be made from 2.4.19.

The alternate maintainer patches apply against the version they list -
2.4.20-pre10-ac is Alan's changes from the 2.4.20-pre10 kernel, so you need
to make a 2.4.20-pre10 source tree first (by applying the 2.4.20-pre10 patch
to a full 2.4.19 source tree)

If you encounter any failed patches that way, you should probably let Alan
know (although he almost certainly will know already)

Cheers,
J.
