Even if you're not using PHP, have a look at http://www.jpcache.com/

It seems this guy has put a great deal of effort into both a caching
engine for PHP, and making use of the gzip encoding that HTTP allows. I
might help reinforce what the docs on mod_gzip have to say. (Which,
incidentally, are at: http://www.schroepl.net/projekte/mod_gzip/ )
