ok

1). I never set DNS in Mandrake never seen a reason to for PPP let the ISP set it. I also use kppp and initiate kppp from Mandrake Control Center under "Network and Internet" (you can also set you host name here if you select expert mode under DrakConnect). If your using a user account make sure your user is in the ppp group also under Mandrake Control Center (might as well add the user to the audio group too).

*NOTE. I found Mandrake doesnt install IPTABLES by default either a good proposition is go to http://www.rpmfind.net download firestarter (firewall app for people who dont like to stuff around) and install IPTABLES with Mandrake Control/Software Management/RpmDrake (+)

2). bet you have a INTEL machine..
The reason it not shutting down is because you didn't set acpi to be activated in the boot manager on the install (there is a small tick box).
To fix this is pretty simple,
1. Go into Mandrake Control Center click on the "Boot" icon then click on "DrakBoot" then click on "configure" make sure "Enable apci [X]" is marked". Now save and and dont exit Mandrake Control Center

2. Now go to "Software Management" then click on the + RpmDrake in the search box enter acpi in the search box, click on [search], install acpid and the acpi module if its there.

3. Now exit that part of Mandrake Control and go to "System" then click
on "DrakXServices" make sure acpi and acpid are both marked [X] to start on boot and then save and exit and reboot.

PS Were I work now is 100% Linux....it was a hard slog but worth it and thanks for all the people who helped me on my trip into Linux.

I've used RedHat 8.0 for quite a well with no problem.
Yesterday my mate lent me a copy of Mandrake 9.1 and i
decided to install it on my machine. All went well,
easy installation and configuration (maybe too easy),
then i found 2 major problem (so far)
1. I can't use internet. I use a normal dial up
server. i could make the connection, and DNS entried
are updated in the resolv.conf but seems Mandrake
still can't get names resolved. I can't even ping the
DNS server.

2. My pc won't shut down. it will just hang at the
"Power Down" point. I clicked the "Halt" button last
nite b4 i went to bed and this morning the PC is still
on.

any one here has any clue?

thanks

J Ai
