Not knowing a thing about Apple Macs I've been asked to look at a problem where a Linux Box is acting as a file server to a bunch of Macs. For some files, when the user on the Mac tries to open a file (in Word) a dialog comes up stating that the file is being modified by another user (but it isn't).
The files in question appear to have different ownership and group (i.e rw-rw-r) to files that don't cause this problem. But changing the linux permissions on the file server makes no difference. The Linux box is running appletalk and Samba. The users claim that it happens whether they use appletalk or "tcp/ip". (obviously tcp/ip is too low a level protocol so I figure that they mean smb but refer to caveat about my knowledge of Macs).
Is there some sort of semaphore system in use here? I.E does the macs keep track of who has what file open in some other manner?
Thanks for any pointers
Pete.
