FWIW, I use mutt to access imap folders here on zip,
and it is very speedy.  I sometimes read the first message
then hold down 'j' to go through all the messages --
about 150 in 10s. (1)

This is mutt 1.3.28-2.2 on debian 3.0., read through
ssh.

(1) I do this strange thing so that I can get the size
in the summary view.  I then sort by size (oz) to
weed out crap like swen viruses.
