Thanks John, that tipped me off and I've got it working now.
For the archives, My install of Fedora Core 2 uses gdm to start X from inittab so editing startx won't do it. Instead edit /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf and uncomment the line saying #DisallowTCP=true and make it
DisallowTCP=false
This was one of those tips that turned up at the right time for me, was playing with x2x last night and needed to do the exact same thing... (probably could get x2x working over ssh...)
btw x2x rocks, two PCs, two monitors, one keyboard and mouse control both.... just go off the edge and you are controlling the other machine...
