'apt-get update' just fetches an updated list of available packages, so that when you run any of the other apt commands, it's working off the latest listings. To actually fetch update packages and install them you'd use either apt-get upgrade or apt-get dist-upgrade. The difference is in the logic the 2 commands use to pick the set of things to upgrade. dist-upgrade is allowed to install new packages to bring things up to date, 'upgrade' on its own will only install new versions of already installed packages. Gaim's biggest virtue is that it supports simultaneously connecting to multiple protocols and accounts. It can talk icq/aim, msn, jabber, yahoo, irc and others.
