The problem isn't creating the index from disk files, htdig will do that fine (see the "local_urls" command).

You could even munge the results from http://whatever to
smb://something/else.

Unless the directories to be indexed contain only public
documents the problem is maintaining the security of the
data. htdig assumes that it is indexing a public website.
It has a few facilities for excluding intranet components
of a site, but it certainly doesn't carry forward any ACL
data into the index.
