You want to use the 'old, slow' USB storage access driver which will pop up thing as 'uba'. Check for CONFIG_BLK_DEV_UB in the kernel.

Tried:
lsmod | grep mod
returned: dm_mod
so unless I've misunderstood (possible) it appears already loaded.
