My development work is mainly web based, and one of the advantages of
running server-based code is how easy it is to demonstrate efficency
increases through improving code.

The cost savings achieved by code optimisation/refactoring versus
having to reinstall/upgrade/cluster your servers are huge, especially
if you are running expensive platforms such as Oracle and Solaris.

If optimising code means your platform can handle more customers for
little cost, your business should see that as a good thing.
