Morning,
I've just completed an install on a laptop with the Intel Pentium M 770
chip.
TO my surprise Ubuntu chose to install the 386 series kernel. Wouldn't
the 586 kernel be "better suited" to the M series chip or is there
something I don't know about the M series requiring the more "generic"
kernel?

I believe Ubuntu comes with only one generic kernel on the CD, so that
is what it installs. There are more specific kernels available from
the repository, but you have to install one yourself once the system
is up and running.
Don't know if this is helpful, but I installed 686 for my centrino. use
apt-get and install the 686 kernel. Check before you install, but I
think it is: linux-686
It works well for me.
