Its your SW not the HW. I have one with k3b (SuSE9.3) and it works perfectly.
I even lashed out for a dual layer DVD and cloned the SuSE DVD
(The DL DVD (a) cost $5 (b) worked for some weeks then got an error, but the 
writer worked!)
