Depending on the skills of your friend, this answer can vary :) The
safest option, baring a driver requirement is Breezy. He can then safely
update to Dapper over the 'net in June. Breezy was a sound release and
is the best option for someone you may find yourself supporting
remotely. An eight week wait for dapper won't hurt :)

If your friend is not interested in doing any specific AMD64 hackery and
just wants a Linux Desktop where he can get all the features and
functionality he expects from a desktop PC than you cannot go past
installing the 32 bit version.

After this, I strongly recommend installing Breezy and upgrading to
Dapper when it's released - this is the path of least grief  :)
