I've just got home and turned on my computer, to find it booting up perfectly normally. While I'm very relieved, I'm also at a loss to explain what's happened. I don't see how the problem could have been a hardware or an ISP one, since, as I mentioned before, I was using the same hardware and ISP when booting up satisfactorily in Windows this morning. It must have been my software, which has, by some unknown means, righted itself.

I hope that the problem won't now recur.

On that assumption, I'm sorry to have bothered people unnecessarily.
