Are you using udev/hotplug or something?  If not, just do
    $ cd /dev; sudo ./MAKEDEV sd
to create the devices.
If you *are* using udev, then I'm not sure what has to happen.  I
really hate this dynamic generation of device nodes; it makes it much
harder to diagnose what's going on.
