I've got a weird issue with xorg & xkb (I think) on a rhel4 box. When X
starts up (inside a VNC session) and starts the gnome-desktop
environment, I get this error:

- --------------------------

Error activating XKB configuration.
Probably internal X server problem.

X server version data:
The XFree86 Project, Inc
40300000
You are using XFree 4.3.0.
There are known problems with complex XKB configurations.
Try using simpler configuration or taking more fresh version of XFree
software.
If you report this situation as a bug, please include:
- - The result of xprop -root | grep XKB
- - The result of gconftool-2 -R /desktop/gnome/peripherals/keyboard/xkb

- --------------------------

When I run the xprop command, I get nothing, nada. And the output for
the second command is:

layouts = [us]
 model = pc105
 overrideSettings = false
 options = []
 update_handlers = []

Running gnome-keyboard-properties, I can't select a keyboard model, and
there only seems to be one "select layout" and no available layouts.

Google isn't giving me many/any hits except for one other person on
centos who had the same problem, which nobody answered. :-\
