Watch your syslog as you insert the device and it'll tell you which 
firmware is missing and where it's looking for it.

With the appropriate firmware installed, my USB DVB-t stick works with 
the stock kernel in Ubuntu (Breezy and Edgy).

No reason it won't work with Ubuntu.  No idea about Mandriva.
