I use Mitsubishi R100 (rebadged Asus wl500g) that I got on special
from deals direct. There is an open source firmware available from
wl500g.info for this model and open firmwares exist for several other
Asus routers. You can also run openwrt on it - see openwrt.org
They're now $30 cheaper than when I got them and look like good
bargain unless you want USB2, but you'll have to wait for Deals Direct
to get stock (it took about a month when I was getting them, but I had
no pressing need).

A bit dated with only USB 1.1 for printers/webcams, but still loaded
with features (eg Samba server to connect with a HDD via USB 1, and
FTP and web server) and very stable. Loads of mods on the wl500g.info
forums too.
nb. getting the default firmware off is a bit of a PITA. I used a
Windows machine, but wine might work. The procedure is to force the
router into firmware recovery mode (by holding the reset button down
while turning the router on). You then run the firmware recovery tool
on the CD using a Windows PC connected via LAN cable. You can upload
anything with the firmware recovery tool - I chose the latest stable
from wl500g.info
Anything capable of openwrt should be a safe bet, since it can be made
to work well, even if it doesn't do so well straight out of the box.
Some interesting long range stuff can be found at
http://www.freenet-antennas.com/
especially the new UltraWAP, but that's probably not what you're interested in.
Highly recommend UltraWAP's, as I recently bought 2 more units, this
time got 130mW models, but it turns out they gave me 200mW units as a
bonus... I also have a earlier 60mW first generation unit too.
Can't go wrong, as they run a linux kernel and so are rock solid for
weeks and months on end.
