When Pendo first mentioned apt-file I thought it was actually able to find files in packages which weren't installed. Unfortunately this is not the case.
From the apt-files package description:
Unlike apt-cache, you can search in which package a file is included or list the contents of a package without installing or fetching it. So no, it has a completely different function from that of "dpkg -S" and is actually much more useful, from my experience. --P -- SLUG - Sydney Linux User's Group Mailing List - http://slug.org.au/ Subscription info and FAQs: http://slug.org.au/faq/mailinglists.html
