I've had plenty of success with Atheros chipset based PCI and PCMCIA wireless NICs. In particular, the Netgear WG311T has worked well for me. All Atheros stuff is supported under linux with Madwifi <http://madwifi.org/wiki/Compatibility> for other supported cards.
