I don't have a vmware-server box in front of me, but have a look in /var/log/vmware (or /var/log/messages) for any sign of what is going on. You can also run "vmware-cmd ThisBox.vmx start" from a terminal and see if that spits out anything useful.
You can also look inside the vmx file if it points to something invalid when you migrated.
