I note that Dean uses gl2 and xv as a back-up. I
use xv :)))
I'm not quite clear what the problem is you're
having with the GUI (?) - though I'm equally not
certain as to whether it's relevant to your problem :)

xv is a good fallback, but i usually use gl2
