Hi,

We have an IBM xSeries 306 (88364SU) in which we just put 4 x 1 GB
of RAM, and when it boots, it says 4096M System Memory Installed, and
then 3327M OK. Once Linux boots up, it only has 3.2 GB.

I tried calling IBM support but the rep said that the missing memory
got allocated to PCI devices.
Have a look at this article.

I have only ever heard of IBM making this claim. Check the bottom of
the article where IBM responds to the memory hole.
It seems unbelievable to me that 0.8 GB would go to PCI devices...
seems like quite a lot. Has anybody run into this before?
I wholly agree that the loss of 800 megabytes or so to "drivers" is
pretty damn steep.
Thanks,

Sorry can't help more than that. I only remembered it because I found
it an outrageous claim when I read that article in the print version of
the Linux Journal.

Cheers.
