G'Day Alan, What's in your /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf? Try to start your WIFI manually by
sudo wpa_supplicant -i wlan0 -D <driver> -c /etc/wpa_supplicant/wpa_supplicant.conf -dd and watch the output for errors.
