I've found the problem. I'm using Privoxy to block adverts, and it was
dutifully fulfilling its purpose by blocking doubleclick.net. Unfortunately,
BBC use doubleclick to serve an advert before displaying the video that you
actually want to see.
The solution is to use a proxy switcher like SwitchProxy or FoxyProxy to
toggle the proxy off when I want to see a BBC page with video.
